About
Us
Life Cycles was founded
in 1999 in Belfast's historic Smithfield Market, selling and repairing
bikes. We are Belfast's only cycling outlet promoting the aims of sustainable
transport and serving the underdeveloped cycle-tourism market.
But the tradition
of cycling in Belfast has roots stretching far back - the city was host
to a landmark event which shaped the face of modern cycling.
A place in
history...
A cycle race
held in Belfast in 1890 heralded the dawning of the age of the bicycle
as we know it today.
 |
Prior
to that, cycling on our cobble-stoned streets (and on streets worldwide)
was a body-wracking experience, as wheel rims then contained a solid
rubber tyre.
All that changed when
Dublin veterinarian John Boyd Dunlop created the first air-filled
tyre - the "pneumatic tyre" - for his son Johnny in 1888.
Shock-absorbed travel
had arrived, and two years later a second-grade cyclist caused a
sensation in Belfast, winning every single race against the stars
of the day thanks to Dunlop's miraculous invention! |
Tradition
lives on...
Likewise, Smithfield's
association with cycling has a notable history. Long a home to cycling
outlets, latterday successor Life Cycles has made Smithfield a destination
for those seeking bikes, servicing, repairs and a range of clothing and
accessories.
Since opening,
we have expanded to offer bike hire services and cycle tours. In 2003
we have launched on-road cycle training and cycle maintenance initiatives
that promote sustainable transport to corporate bodies, public sector
clients, community groups and individuals.
Wherever you
or your kids go cycling, Life Cycles is your first port of call for getting
into gear and rekindling the original spirit of John Boyd Dunlop.
